The Brief

Joe Browns wanted to open its first store in the south of England in Cirencester, using the project not just as a new shop opening, but as a new concept store benchmark for future expansion. The brief was shaped around an evolution, not redesign approach: keep the brand’s eccentricity, richness and theatricality, but refine it into a format that looked more bespoke, worked harder operationally, and could support broader rollout ambitions.

The Challenge

The challenge was to create a store with real Joe Browns personality while solving for a long list of practical realities. The team needed to turn a historic high street shell into a premium, story-led environment that still felt commercially sensible, technically robust and repeatable, while balancing local narrative with brand consistency, landlord approvals, flexible merchandising and a workable fitting-room and back-of-house plan.

The Solution

SmithBrewer approached the project as a research led concept and delivery exercise. Early concept work helped shape the direction, but the finished store ultimately resolved into a more brand led boutique environment, built around pale blue panelled wall bays, dark stained timber shelving, aged decorative metalwork, layered wallpapers, floral display niches, statement lighting and more immersive customer moments across the cash desk, footwear and fitting room areas. That narrative then fed into a more scalable physical system, combining perimeter merchandising, decorative wall treatments, generous fitting rooms, integrated cash desk planning and a richer ceiling language, including greenery, neon signage and a stained glass style skylight, all carried through from concept intent into build.

The Outcomes

Joe Browns Cirencester opened for first trade on Friday 20 March 2026, with a grand opening event on Saturday 21 March 2026. Publicly, the store was positioned as Joe Browns’ first South of England location and a 2,600 sq ft destination designed by SmithBrewer. Internally, the project proved that a high-personality brand could be translated into a more controlled, immersive and locally resonant retail format, setting a stronger benchmark for future rollout.
